Greek Week!
Greek Week...my all-time favorite week of the year! Every year during the spring semester, the Greek community spends a whole week competing in various activities and games under a certain theme with one another while also raising money for a good cause. The theme for Greek Week this year was music genres, and my sorority chose country as ours. Greek Week is not only about raising money but also about showing other students at ONU how great Greek life is. During this week, fraternities and sororities are reminded that although we each have our own chapter to which we belong, we still share many of the same values such as creating lifelong friendships, helping others by volunteering, and growing to become the best version of ourselves to achieve our future goals in life.
The week began last Monday with Greek Sing. This is an event that fraternities and sororities spend weeks practicing and preparing for. For our performance, we dressed in cowboy boots, hats, flannels, a pair of jeans, and a belt to give that authentic country vibe. We also had a few props and even a few people dressed up in big, inflatable cow costumes! On Wednesday was Pandora's Box. This activity is always kept a secret until it's time to start. This year, the activity was Mario Kart! I did not participate in this event but instead got to watch all of the frats and sororities show off their Mario Kart skills. After playing intense Mario Kart games, all Greek chapters competed in Trivia. For this activity, five members are needed from each chapter to form a team that will answer questions on various topics to earn points for their chapter. This activity was not only fun to witness, but also informative because you learn a few things that you hadn't already known. The next event was kickball which occurred on Thursday. For this event, I wore one of the inflatable cow costumes that was used in our Greek Sing performance. I did not play kickball thankfully, although that would have been hilarious though. After kickball, we all went indoors and cheered on two of our members as they competed in a corn hole tournament. On Friday, volleyball was the event of the day. Volleyball is one of the most competitive Greek Week events because both the fraternities and sororities have a pretty strong feel for the game itself. And finally, on Saturday came Greek Olympics. Greek Olympics is the busiest day of Greek Week because there are over five events! The events that take place for Greek Olympics are chariot race, egg toss, ultimate relay, dodgeball, ten-person pyramid, cardboard canoe, and mud tug. Out of all of these events that took place, I participated in the chariot race and ultimate relay. For the chariot race, there are four runners required for the whole race, but only two are pushing it at a time and switching off halfway. The race is run around Fraternity Circle toward the back of campus. For my chapter's chariot, we used a shopping cart. For the ultimate relay event, there are multiple stations that members of a chapter must complete in a timely manner. For this event, I was wrapped in toilet paper by one of my sisters. I know that probably sounds ridiculous, but honestly, it's hilarious to watch.
Now as I'm writing this, it's bittersweet to think about how that was the last Greek Week that I will ever get to experience at ONU. I won't get to scream my lungs out cheering on my friends during mud tug or get to stay up late for multiple nights working on our banner in the house while watching Disney movies again. Although Greek Week has officially ended and as my time at ONU continues to dwindle each day, I am forever thankful for every moment I got to share with some of the most important people in my life.
As someone who is not affiliated with any Greek activities, it was so fun to see all the events and social media posts about them. This week is an absolute blast for everyone involved and is definitely something ONU Greek Life should be proud of! Congratulations on your Greek Week win!

ReplyDeleteI am so glad to hear that Greek Week went well! I just joined a sorority this semester and Greek Week is one of the things I am most excited to participate in next year. I can tell by your pictures that the event has had a great impact on your time here at ONU! I know that the entire event helps you not only get closer with your sorority but with other sororities and fraternities as well. I am so glad that you had a great week and I hope the rest of your senior year goes well! I cannot wait to see everything that you do in the future and I am glad to have gotten to know you through this class! I will definitely read some more of your blogs throughout the next few weeks but I wanted to say good luck on your next journey in case I forget to say it at some point within the next four weeks of the semester!
I was so sad that I couldn't attend Greek Week due to Hello, Dolly tech rehearsals, but it sounds like so much fun. However, I did get to watch the Greek Sing competition from my dressing room and Theta did so good! Also I loved seeing all the inflatable cow costumes in the Greek Week photos. I'm definitely jealous of those outfits.
ReplyDeleteThis was definitely my favorite Greek Week yet, and I am so glad that I was able to spend it with you! While it was an exhausted week, it was totally worth it to spend time with my closest friends on campus. P.S. GO CHARIOT!!!
